April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month.
For us its such an important month. My home is also home to several rescued pets. Each of them has their own story but they all have one thing in common. Each was treated with cruelty by humans before they came to be mine.
So, I’ve got a personal message for people who mistreat animals. Its something you do by choice. You make your excuses, I’m certain, but ultimately you have the ability to choose to be kind. In this post I am choosing to be as kind as I can to those who mistreat animals when I say what follows:
You, the previous owner who admittedly ran over your own dog and left him on the side of the road to die simply because of money – he’s my dog now. He’s been my dog for a few years now. Here he is loved and cherished. And you know what?… he loves and cherishes me right back.
You, the person who kept my beagle in that metal box on the back of your hunting truck. And off season you kept her outside in all kinds of weather, often forgetting to give her water. You never got her spayed and so she got pregnant. Then you just dumped her because she could not hunt well while she was so pregnant. Well, she’s my beagle now. It took several years to earn her trust. She now knows she will never ever be kept in the metal “beagle box” again. Her faith in me allows her to feel safe to be picked up and held – finally. You cannot have her back. She won’t go. I am her person and she has a sense of love and belonging here.
I won’t go on with the remaining stories. I will just say this: there is no place for animal cruelty in a world that calls itself civilized. This is a world that finds the death and suffering of humans so unacceptable yet allows so much suffering of animals.
We’re dedicated to building awareness and empathy in younger generations through our children’s books. We hope to raise up children into adults who will love and respect animals. That’s how we help prevent animal cruelty here at TreehouseToons.com.
